Orchids are one of the most prolific flowering
plants, becoming popular in Europe in the 18th century.
Before that they were strictly ‘out of bounds’
being searched for and discovered only by enthusiasts in
Eastern climates and jungle conditions.
The word Orchid is used to describe the huge Orchidace family,
with varying sizes, shapes colours and even some scented
varieties. There are now more than 50.000 different species
of botanical orchids, 1600 of these are of the Dendrobium
genus. And there are possibly thousands of Hybrids.
These amazing plants have always fascinated us with their
colour, beauty and even bizarre appearance. Sizes and shapes
vary from minute to large, dainty and fragrant to some almost
‘spider-like’ flowers and the occasional almost
‘ugly faced’ flowers. The varieties we supply
are predominately Dendrobiums, but we also import Mokaras,
Arandas and Ascocendas and occasionally Vandas and Oncidiums.
All our Orchids are commercially grown on farms in Thailand
with much of the early propagation and cultivation also
done on site. New varieties and species are being cultivated
in greenhouses all the time now and what were once thought
of as exotic and untouchable, carrying a high price tag
can now be introduced into all homes, either as cut flowers
or plants – still evoking the exotic but with manageable
care instructions and reasonable prices.
Generally Orchids have taken off in a big way and they are
here to stay!
